A glittering evening, filled with great music, exuberant dancing and delicious food was enjoyed by everyone who attended this year’s Rajans’ Ball - the annual fund raising event organised by the Dharamaraja College Old Boys’ Union in the UK. Held at the Grange City Hotel in the heart of London, the event started in grand style with guests being welcomed by the president of the union, Mr. Manjuka Tennakoon, for a champagne reception followed by a sumptuous Sri Lankan meal. Music for the evening was provided by the ever-excellent Exceed, with guests kept entertained with a table magician and a surprise after dinner singing duo.
The Rajans’ Ball 2017 follows the success of last year’s event, which was also organised to support the OBU’s student assistance programme, “Shaping Lives”. This programme provides monthly bursaries to economically disadvantaged students of Dharamaraja College, providing food, stationery and other educational expenses. All proceeds from the grand raffle draw held at the dinner will be used to ensure continued funding for the “Shaping Lives” programme, and extend its reach to support more needy students at the college.
Following dinner, the music and dancing got into full swing, with Exceed getting the entire room moving. The strains of classic songs from Sri Lanka together interspersed with rock, pop and the always popular balia rhythms kept the guests on the dance floor into the small hours of the night, and a fantastic time was had by all!
The executive committee of the OBU-UK are grateful to the support given by fellow Rajans, Anu Galgamuwa, Udeni Amarakone, Lasitha Leelasena, Dulan Mudalige, Niroshan Dissanayake, Uchitha Herath and Tiran Gunaratna for their help and support organising the Ball. The organisers would like to thank the sponsors of the event for their generous contributions of raffle prizes, souvenir advertisements and other donations that helped support the event and the “Shaping Lives” programme. They would also like to thank everyone who came on the night to help make it a memorable and enjoyable evening for all concerned. We are looking forward to the Rajans’ Ball 2018 already!
